As the cooler weather slowly settles in the Northeast, so is the 2017 racing season. New Jersey Motorsports Park host the final racing weekend of the season with Weekend Of Thunder featuring Trans-Am Series, F1600 Series, F2000 Series, and Pro IT Series.
This event was held on October 7th and 8th. On Saturday, the Trans-Am Series held qualifying. The cars were awesome to watch with 2-time defending champion Amy Ruman among the racers competing at NJMP. Here are some photos of the qualifying. The last photo is the #78 car going off the track during qualifying.
After the F1600 Series had their first race, the Pro IT Series raced next. Unfortunately, the race was not promoted by NJMP on the website weeks before this race was held. It was only mentioned in the program guide. The race went on for about 30 minutes. After their race was over, the Atlantic Championship Series and the F2000 Series took the track to close out Saturday racing action. At first, it was confusing seeing only three cars with the pace car and a bunch of cars far behind.
It was still a fun event to attend but there are some things I would like to see change for this event next year. I would like to see racing for a 3 day weekend. For example, have the first races for the F1600 Series, Pro IT Series, Atlantic Championship Series, and F2000 Series race Friday. On Saturday, The TA2 class, F1600 Series races 2 and 3, and Pro IT Series. And for Sunday, F2000 Series, Atlantic Series, and the Trans-Am Series to conclude the racing weekend. The reason I say this is because, on Sunday, racing started early in the morning and concluded in the evening. Even that is too much racing for a racing fan.
If New Jersey Motorsports Park considers changing the Weekend Of Thunder format, it would be a nice weekend for racing fans. This season has been really fun and I can’t wait to do it again in 2018.
