The league provided details on working with team executives on additional details for this season, including COVID-19 safety protocols.
The President of the Atlantic League, Rick White, on the return of the Atlantic League, said, “Our priority is protecting public welfare, and we still have much to do. The league is finalizing the admission of new teams, conducting player signings, and working with our Major League Baseball partners on test initiatives for the ’21 campaign. We are mindful of government safety concerns, especially ballpark attendance allowances. But even as we address those challenges, we feel it critical to announce our intention to play a full season this year. Atlantic League baseball is an essential part of our communities, and we hope this announcement provides inspiration to all our fans.”
In 2020, the league allowed teams to play during the canceled season. The Somerset Patriots and Sugar Land Skeeters formed their own leagues during the canceled season. They were able to play regular-season games at their ballparks.
The new season will feature six teams, including the returning Long Island Ducks, Southern Maryland Blue Crabs, Lancaster Barnstormers, York Revolution, High Point Rockers, and the expansion team Gastonia Honey Hunters. The league did lose a couple of teams during the minor league overall. They were the Somerset Patriots (Double-A) and the Sugar Land Skeeters (Triple-A).
