Chip Ganassi Racing returns to IMSA competition in 2021 with Cadillac

On Monday, Chip Ganassi Racing announced its return to the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship with Cadillac in the DPi category. The last time Ganassi competed in sportscar racing was in 2019 for Ford in both IMSA and WEC. Ganassi joined IMSA, then known as the Rolex Sports Car Series, in 2004, and won the championship that season. The team would win a record seven championships with 64 wins, including winning the Rolex 24 at Daytona for three-straight years from 2006-08, 12 Hours of Sebring in 2014, and winning the 2016 24 Hours of Le Mans in the LMGTE Ford GT.

Ganassi released a statement on returning to IMSA, saying, “We can’t wait to get back to IMSA and fight for the overall win after several years competing in the GTLM class. Our relationship with General Motors has expanded from the NASCAR Cup Series and we couldn’t be happier. Partnering with Cadillac is a tremendous opportunity for our team and we want to start delivering for them in January at the Rolex 24 At Daytona.”

Cadillac entered into the DPi category in 2017, replacing Corvette DPi. The manufacturer has won four consecutive Rolex 24 Daytona wins, 2019 12 Hours of Sebring, Petit Le Mans, and Long Beach. Cadillac has won the drivers’ championship and constructors championship twice, along with 11 poles and 14 wins.

Vice President of Cadillac Roy Harvey on the addition of Ganassi to its IMSA lineup said, “We are very excited to welcome Chip Ganassi Racing to the Cadillac competition family. Their success across many forms of racing, including sports cars, will be a great addition to our IMSA WeatherTech line-up. Chip’s pedigree at winning the Rolex 24 At Daytona eight times as well as their championships in this form of racing gives Cadillac another stalwart team to compete for the 2021 IMSA DPi championship.”

The team will announce its driver lineup and sponsors at a later date. The 2021 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season starts January 28th-31st at Daytona International Speedway.
