Gio Scelzi earns his first career win at All American Speedway

The ARCA Menards Series West Series started a doubleheader weekend Friday night at All American Speedway in the NAPA Auto Parts 125 from Roseville, CA. Qualifying took place earlier in the day, and both Taylor Gray and Mason Diaz tied for the pole with the exact time of 13.904 seconds at 86.220 mph. Gray would win the tiebreaker based on points. Twelve cars competed in this race.

The action got started two laps into the race as Todd Souza spun Holley Hollan at turn one before being hit from behind by Takuma Koga, destroying the right front quarter panel leaving debris on the track to bring out the first caution. Koga was able to continue with the race.

Once the debris was off the track, the race resumed on lap six. Gray and Diaz were side-by-side for several laps before Gray took control of first place. Blaine Perkins challenge Diaz for second place and, at one point, was ahead of him before Diaz spun him out in between turns three and four to bring out the second caution of the night.

Gray had led all but eight laps so far as the race resumed on lap 22. He got off to a great jump to stay ahead of Diaz for the lead. Diaz would catch him and, once again, side-by-side for the lead. Gray was able to maintain the lead on lap 40. Gray was able to extend his lead but not for long as the third caution was out for a spin at turn four by Bridget Burgess.

Gray continued to lead on the restart on lap 66. Both Gray and Diaz were once again fighting for first while pulling away from Trotter in third. Trotter tried to defend the third position, but Gio Scelzi made a pass on the inside of turn three to take over third place. There were no changes in order when the caution came out for the fourth time for debris from Todd Souza’s car.

Once the debris was off the track, the race resumed with 17 laps to go. The drivers were antsy as the laps were winding down. Holley Hollan’s solo spin at turn four brought out the fifth caution with 14 laps to go. She was able to get her car going again without sustaining any damage. The field got back in line for the restart with ten laps to go.

Right away, drivers were aggressively attempting to move up the field. Gracie Trotter hit Jack Wood at turn three, and in another separate accident, Mason Diaz was hit by Blaine Perkins to bring out the sixth caution. Diaz’s day was done and would finish in twelfth place.

When the race resumed with five laps to go, Gray and Scelzi were neck and neck for the lead. Both drivers made contact with each other approaching the white flag, and Gray spun out at turn one, leaving Gio Scelzi all by himself to earn his first career ARCA Menards Series West win by 1.677 over Todd Souza.

With two races left in the season, Jesse Love’s lead is now 17 points over Blaine Perkins. The doubleheader concludes on Sunday, October 25th, from Kern County Raceway Park in Bakersfield, CA, for the NAPA / ENEOS 125 at 5 pm on NBC Sports Gold Track Pass.
