Opinion Trax: Pro Wrestling pushes through during COVID-19

By Michael Heilman

Last month, the sports world hit the pause button as states try to contain the coronavirus from spreading any further. While fans are waiting for sports to resume, they are trying to find any entertainment to watch. While iRacing has stepped up in a big way, pro wrestling is not backing down without a fight.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, WWE has held its weekly shows Raw, Smackdown, and NXT from their Performance Center in Orlando, FL. This past weekend, WWE held its annual WrestleMania show for two days also from the Performance Center. Not far up in Jacksonville, FL, AEW have held their weekly show Dynamite at the Daily’s Palace. AEW taped weeks of television from the Daily’s Palace before relocating to QT Marshall’s gym in Norcross, GA, due to the site now being used as a drive-thru testing site for COVID-19.

Both companies deserve a round of applause for their efforts to keep us entertained. While many people are advocating them to stop producing shows, both companies are going to continue to produce shows until they must shutdown. While sports reporters are looking for stories to write, those who cover wrestling are thankful that these two companies are giving them content to talk about whether they are good or bad.

Pro wrestling has helped people get away from any COVID-19 news coverage to take their minds off of it for a while. Many fans had tickets to attend these events now they get to watch from the comfort of their own homes. Sure, we would all like to be there cheering and booing the wrestlers, we would love to interact with them and feel apart of the action. While we’re not able to be there just yet, we can still do those things from the comfort of our homes.

So, the next time you are on social media, be sure to send a thank you post to them for what they are doing. During these difficult times, even wrestlers would love to see a thank you from their fans on their timelines. They appreciate the feedback for what they do and know that they matter. While we continue to wait for the pandemic to end, let’s just relax and enjoy the sights and sounds of pro wrestling. Before we know it, COVID-19 will go down one, two, three.
