A couple of weeks ago, the XFL filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Since then, the XFL has put itself up for sale, and there are several people interested in buying the XFL, according to Jonathan Berr from Forbes.
Andrew Kline is a former NFL player and now the Founder and Managing Director of Park Lane, an investment bank that provides advisory services to sports teams and businesses. Kline told Forbes “There are many folks interested and calling us, but we are not working on anything, and without a billionaire stepping in for Vince, we are not interested,” he added, “If Vince McMahon was 100% committed to the XFL, I think it could have survived COVID-19 and much worse.”
These quotes by Kline are interesting. How many people have called about the XFL and its price? And who are the people interested in buying the XFL. Well, the XFL can be saved, but it has to be more than one person to negotiate with the XFL lawyers and Vince McMahon before a judge approves a sale.
Since the XFL has eight teams, if you were to get eight people interested in buying the XFL, they could combine their incomes, and each owns a franchise as part of the agreement if approved, and I’m sure Kline and McMahon would listen if the money is right. You don’t need to have one person owning the league, then people will start to speculate as to how long that person is willing to go, and that person can shut it down anytime like what McMahon did. If you were to have multiple people involved, there would be a chance that the league could be successful in the long run.
But if you ask some people, they will tell you that the only way the XFL can survive is if the NFL bought it. The answer is no; the NFL will never acquire the XFL. As much as people want the NFL to buy the league, they won’t. If the NFL wanted to have a spring league as they did with NFL Europe, they would’ve started another one a long time ago. The NFL relies on college football for player development, yet so many players will never have a chance to chase their dreams unless they go to the CFL or play in the indoor leagues.
The Phillip Walker and Kenny Robinson players need a league like the XFL to continue so they can not only play the game they love but also support their families while building game tape for scouts. The XFL did well in television ratings, beating some NBA, NHL, and some college basketball games. Football is bigger in popularity from twenty years ago, and fans want more football after the NFL ends.
If the XFL has any hopes of continuing operations for years to come, they need more than one person to buy the league. This is why the NFL, NHL, MLB, and the NBA have lasted a long time because they have individual owners who run the leagues, not one person. Together, not only could they buy the XFL, but give football fans hopes that spring football will be around for a long time.
