Pirates crush Xtreme in Indoor Football League debut

Both the Massachusetts Pirates and Louisville Xtreme made their Indoor Football League debut’s Saturday night at the KFC Yum! Center. The Pirates played in the National Arena League for three seasons. The Louisville Xtreme were in the American Arena League.

The game’s first scoring came as Massachusetts defensive lineman J.D. Griggs recovered a fumble and went twelve yards for the touchdown. The Pirates went up 7-0 with 6:46 left in the first quarter. The Pirates were on the Xtreme four-yard line when the first quarter ended.

On the next play to begin the second quarter, the Pirates added another touchdown when Sean Brackett connected to Justin Stockton. The Pirates extend their lead to 14-0. Louisville would answer back when Bryan Hicks found Edgar Poe for a 14-yard touchdown with 9:36 left in the second quarter. Derek Vacha missed the extra point, and it was a 14-6 Pirates lead.

Late in the second period, the Pirates added another touchdown with thirty-five seconds left. Alejandro Bennifield found Thomas Owens for a three-yard touchdown and added to their lead 21-6. The second quarter ended with the Pirates up 21-6.

With 9:15 left in the third quarter, the Xtreme cut the Pirates lead 21-12 after Bryan Hicks ran for a one-yard touchdown. This was as close as the Xtreme got to the Pirates for the whole game.

The Pirates responded with Alejandro Bennifield throwing a 45-yard touchdown pass to Thomas Owens for the second time. The Pirates started to pull away 28-12 with 7:24 left in the third quarter. The score remained 28-12, with the Pirates on the Xtreme’s three-yard line to start the fourth quarter.

On the second play of the fourth quarter, Pirates quarterback Alejandro Bennifield took it to the house for a touchdown. The extra point was good, and the Pirates extended their lead 35-12. With 9:05 left in the fourth quarter, Bennifield threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to Thomas Owens for the third time. The extra point was good, and the lead was now 42-12.

Xtreme quarterback Dalton Oliver connected to Quan Shorts for a 21-yard touchdown pass to cut the Pirates lead 42-18. Oliver tried to get the two-point conversion but failed. With 2:22 left in the game, Pirates running back Justin Stockton rushed for a six-yard touchdown to put the game away as the Pirates defeated the Louisville Xtreme 49-18.

Both Pirates quarterbacks combined for 11-24, 138-yards passing, four touchdown passes, and one interception. Justin Stockton had eleven carries for 82-yards and one touchdown. The Pirates receivers combined for eleven receptions for 138-yards, and four touchdown catches. The Pirates defense had two sacks and two forced fumbles.

Both Louisville quarterbacks combined to go 17-26 for 116-yards and two touchdown passes. Louisville rushers combined for 17 carries for 19-yards and one rushing touchdown. The Xtreme receivers combined for 17 receptions for 116-yards and two touchdowns. Louisville’s defense did not record a sack and had one interception.

The Xtreme will have a bye next week, while the Pirates travel to Green Bay to play the Blizzard next Sunday, May 2nd, at 4:05 pm on YouTube.
