Sam Mayer led 165 laps to win at Toledo Speedway

For the first time this year, both the ARCA Menards Series and the ARCA Menards Series East competed on the same track Saturday evening at Toledo Speedway in the Royal Truck & Trailer 200. Sam Mayer won the pole earlier in the day with a lap time of 15.914 at 113.108 mph. Mayer has won three of the last four short track races. Chandler Smith qualified second with a lap time of 15.940 at 112.923 mph. There was a total of 19 cars competing in this race. Some cars had an “E” on the side of their numbers, indicating that they are competing in the East Series only.

Sam Mayer was able to get ahead of Chandler Smith at the start of the race. He led two laps before Chandler Smith caught up to him and passed him on the inside off of turn four for the lead. At one point, Smith’s lead was up to 1.266 seconds over Mayer. Mayer would catch Smith and use the inside lane in between turns three and four to resume the leader. Smith had led 37 laps. Another good battle was brewing for third place between Hailie Deegan and Ty Gibbs. This lasted a couple of laps before Gibbs used the inside lane on the front stretch to get by Deegan for third place. Gibbs would then challenge Chandler Smith for second and got it just as the first caution of the afternoon would come out on lap 56 for Chase Cabre. He suffered a flat tire and hit the styrofoam blocks at turn one.

Mayer got a great jump on the restart at lap 64 with Gibbs sitting in second and Chandler Smith third. On lap 71, Taylor Gray bumped Michael Self out of the way at turn four to take the sixth position. Five laps later, the second caution would come out for the first race break. Teams have five minutes to work on their cars, change tires, and add fuel. Once the break was done, it was time to get back to racing on lap 81.

Mayer shot to the front while Ty Gibbs and Chandler Smith were side-by-side for second place that ultimately went to Smith. On the same lap, Michael Self got the sixth position back from Taylor Gray. Contact was made between the No. 42 car of Parker Retzlaff and the No. 15 of Drew Dollar, which sent Dollar sideways and into the styrofoam blocks in between turns three and four to bring out the third caution of the day.

After the track crews cleaned up the track, the race resumed on lap 97. Once again, Mayer got off to a great start leaving Smith and Gibbs in the dust. Further back, Deegan, Self, and Gray were fighting for fifth place. Once the dust settled down, Self was in fifth, Deegan was sixth, and Gray was seventh. On lap 113, Deegan used the inside lane at turn four to take the fifth spot away from Michael Self. On lap 140, Ty Gibbs used the inside lane to get by Chandler Smith for second place. Eleven laps later, the fourth caution would come out for the second break. Once again, teams have five minutes to change tires, work on the cars, and add fuel.
