Mayer is the second driver from JR Motorsports Late Model program behind current Cup Series driver William Byron to return to JR Motorsports and compete in the Xfinity Series. The 17-year-old won’t be able to compete in the Xfinity Series until he turns 18-years-old which will be on June 26th, 2021. At that point, he will compete in the second half of the season and all of the 2022 season. Mayer said in the statement, “Having the opportunity to return to JR Motorsports after racing late models with them in 2018 is definitely very special to me. Being able to share this news makes me very excited for the coming year. I hope I can learn as much as I can in the second half of next season and to be ready to go race full time for the NXS championship in 2022.”
Mayer is a native of Franklin, Wis, and is the son of former IndyCar and road racing driver Scott Mayer. Sam competed in the Junior Motorsports Late Model team in 2018 and 2019, which included a win at the Bobby Isaac Memorial.
Junior Motorsports General Manager Kelly Earnhardt Miller on Mayer reuniting with JRM for 2021, saying, “When Sam first came to run the late model a couple of years ago, he was adamant he would be racing an Xfinity car for us someday. I admired his initiative then, and now we’re happy to help make his dream a reality. It will be quite a step up, but it’s one he’s ready to make. He’s shown he has the skills to be successful at a very high level.”
Mayer is currently leading the points in both the ARCA Menards Series East and the ARCA Sioux Chief Showdown. He will look to continue his winning ways Thursday night at Bristol Motor Speedway for a duel event for both the ARCA Menards Series and the ARCA Menards Series East at 9:30 pm on FS1.
