Ty Gibbs dominates at Winchester Speedway

Just 48 hours removed from racing at Bristol Motor Speedway Thursday night, the ARCA Menards Series were at Winchester Speedway in Winchester, IN, Saturday afternoon for the Toyota 200. Ty Gibbs won the pole earlier in the day with a lap time of 15.685 at 114.759 mph. Michael Self, who has a one-point lead in the standings, qualified second with a lap time of 15.842 at 113.622 mph. Fourteen cars were competing in the race.

Gibbs got off to a great start leaving Michael Self and Bret Holmes battling for second. He had about a second lead over Self on the seventh lap. Seven laps later, Self, Holmes, and Taylor Gray were battling for second as Self was able to keep the position and distance himself from Holmes and Gray. Both drivers were able to catch Gibbs and, at one point, challenged him for the lead; however, Gibbs’ car took off like a rocket and distanced himself from them. Hailie Deegan spun at turn two to bring out the first caution.

Gibbs would get the better of Michael Self on the restart at lap 65. He remained in the lead until the second caution was out on lap 76 for the first race break. During the break, teams have five minutes to change tires, add fuel, and make adjustments to their cars. Before the race resumed on lap 80, Michael Self was credited with leading a lap during the caution. Michael Self stayed with Gibbs briefly before settling for second. By lap 91, Gibbs’s lead .528 seconds over Self. Hailie Deegan blew a right-front tire and hit the outside wall at turn two to bring out the third caution of the afternoon. Her day would come an end and finished in 12th place.

The race resumed on lap 122 once again with Ty Gibbs and Michael Self battling side-by-side for the lead. Gibbs would once again get the better of Self and pulled away. The top two cars were running single file when Jesse Love made a pass from the inside of Bret Holmes to take the third spot on lap 139. Shortly after that pass, the fourth caution came out for the second break.

For the final time of the afternoon, Ty Gibbs led the field to the restart on lap 153. With 39 laps to go, Michael Self and Bret Holmes fought for second and bumped each other at turn four but managed to keep their positions with Jesse Love in their rear-view mirror. Meanwhile, Gibbs would lead 199 laps to win his fifth race of the season by .966 seconds over Michael Self.

The rest of the top ten finishers were Bret Holmes third, Jesse Love fourth, Taylor Gray fifth, Drew Dollar sixth one-lap down, Mike Basham seventh six laps down, Eric Caudell eighth 18 laps down, Brad Smith ninth 25 laps down, and Con Nicolopoulos tenth 30 laps down. There were four cautions for 23 laps and two lead changes.

With a second-place finish, Michael Self has extended his points lead to just three points ahead of Bret Holmes. Hailie Deegan sits in third (-60), and Drew Dollar fourth (-79). The ARCA Menards Series will now head to Memphis International Speedway for the Sioux Chief PowerPEX 200 next Saturday at 7 pm on MAVTV and NBC Sports Gold Track Pass.
