Chip Ganassi Racing announced today at Texas Motor Speedway that they have resigned Kurt Busch to a multiyear deal, which will keep him in the No. 1 Monster Energy Chevrolet Camaro.
Busch, 41, was in his final year with Chip Ganassi Racing before signing this extension. This year, Busch has one win that came at Kentucky Speedway in July, six top-five finishes, and seventeen top ten finishes. He is currently thirteenth in points.
This extension will also allow Busch to compete in his twentieth season next year. Busch’s Monster Energy Cup Series career began in September 2000 at Dover International Speedway, when he replaced Chad Little in the number 97 John Deere Ford Taurus. From there, Busch never looked back, and when the 2001 season started he had a full-time ride. Busch’s record includes thirty-one wins, one hundred and forty-three top-five finishes, two hundred and ninety-seven top-ten finishes, and twenty-seven poles. His signature wins during his career include winning the 2010 Coca-Cola 600 and the 2017 Daytona 500. Busch also won the inaugural NASCAR Nextel Cup Series playoff championship in 2004 for Roush Racing.
After Busch left Roush Racing in 2005, he went on to race for numerous teams, including Penske Racing for five years, Phoenix Racing in 2012, Furniture Row Racing in 2013, and Stewart-Haas Racing for five years. Nice to see one of the “older” drivers retain his ride and not be shuffled out for a younger driver who has yet to accomplish the skills necessary to mix it up with the big boys. What do you think?
