The Long Island Ducks survived Game One of the Liberty Division Championship Series defeating the High Point Rockers 8-7 from BB&T Park.
After two scoreless innings, the Ducks scored first in the top of the third inning. The Ducks first baseman David Washington tripled to left field, and shortstop Vladimir Frias tripled on a line drive to right field to bring home Washington and put the Ducks up 1-0. Then D’Arby Myers and Rey Fuentes walked to load the bases. Up next for the Ducks was second baseman Steve Lombardozzi who doubled on a fly ball to center field to bring home both Frias and Myers which extended the lead 3-0. The Ducks would score one more run in the inning when left fielder L.J Mazzilli hit a sacrifice fly to right field brought home Fuentes to make it a 4-0 Ducks lead.
In the sixth inning, L.J Mazzilli walked, and Hector Sanchez singled to get on base. Third basemen Deibinson Romero hit a sacrifice fly out to left field to bring home Mazzilli which put the Ducks up 5-0.
The Rockers finally answered in the bottom of the sixth inning when designated hitter Quincy Latimore homered out to center field to cut the Ducks lead 5-1.
The Ducks would add two more runs to the scoreboard in the top of the seventh inning. Shortstop Vladimir Frias singled and walks by D’Arby Myers and Steve Lombardozzi loaded the bases. Designated hitter Lew Ford hit a ground ball to third base and brought home Frias to put the Ducks up 6-1. One more run was added when L.J Mazzilli singled to left field to bring home D’Arby Myers. The Ducks now had a 7-1 lead.
The Rockers began to storm back and get themselves back in the ball game in the bottom of the seventh inning. Myles Schroder walked, and Stephen Cardullo singled, when Rockers second baseman Michael Russell hit a line drive to right field to bring home Schroder to cut the Ducks lead 7-2. Rockers third baseman Hector Gomez then doubled out to right field to score both Stephen Cardullo and Michael Russell to put the Rockers within three. The Rockers now trailed the Ducks 7-4. The Rockers would add one more run on a bases-loaded walk by Ducks pitcher Myles Smith to cut the Ducks lead to 7-5. Quincy Latimore, Richie Shaffer, and Jared Mitchell walked followed by a Myles Schroder single to bring both Rey Fuentes and Quincy Latimore home to even the score at 7-7.
The Ducks, however, would get the lead back in the top of the eighth inning when Ducks third baseman Deibinson Romero homed out to left field to give the Ducks an 8-7 lead. Ducks pitcher Cody Mincey finished the game to give the Ducks an 8-7 win in Game 1 of the Liberty Division Championship Series.
Ducks pitcher Rob Rogers (0.1 IP, 1 H) earned the win while Cody Mincey (2 IP, 1 BB, 1 SO) earned the save. Game Two of the Liberty Division Championship Series is tomorrow night at 6:30 from BB&T Park.
