By Michael Heilman

The Sugar Land Skeeters took a 2-1 series lead defeating the York Revolution 9-1 Friday night from PeoplesBank Park. The Skeeters are now one win away from advancing to the Atlantic League Championship Finals.

The Revolution got things started in the bottom of the first inning as Designated Hitter Telvin Nash doubled to center field. The next batter up was first baseman Isaias Tejeda, who doubled to left field to bring home Nash to give the Revolution a 1-0.

The Skeeters answered back quickly in the top of the second inning when shortstop Jason Martinson homered out to left center field to tie the game up at 1-1.

The Skeeters then blew the game wide open in the top of the third inning. Left fielder Wynton Bernard got things rolling by hitting a triple out to right field. Next batter up was center fielder Anthony Giansanti, who singled out to left field to bring home Bernard to give the Skeeters a 2-1 lead. Right fielder Zach Borenstein would then hit a double out to right field to bring Giansanti home to extend the lead 3-1. Designated hitter Denis Phipps would then hit a double out to left field to further the Skeeters lead 4-1. Third baseman Juan Silverio would also hit a double out to right field to bring home Phipps to make it a 5-1 Skeeters lead. After a walk to Cody Stanley and a Jason Martinson single to left field, the Skeeters would then add one more run as second baseman Javier Betancourt singled out to left field to drive home Silverio to further the Skeeters lead at 6-1.

The Skeeters would continue to add to the scoring column. After a single to left field by Anthony Giansanti, Skeeters Designated hitter Denis Phipps hit a two-run home run out to left center field to further the Skeeters lead 8-1.

In the top of the eighth inning, Skeeters Jason Martinson singled on a ground ball to Revolution shortstop Ryan Dent. Martinson would then go on to steal second and third base. After a Javier Betancourt walk, the Skeeters would add another run thanks to a Wynton Bernard sacrifice fly out to left field to score Martinson and put the Skeeters up 9-1.

The Skeeters then brought out pitcher Daniel Gibson to finish the game. He was able to strikeout Henry Castillo for out number one, James Skelton to ground out for out number two and Alvaro Rondon to ground out to give the Skeeters a 9-1 win and a 2-1 series lead. Skeeters pitcher Troy Scribner (7 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 10 SO) was the winning pitcher.

The Skeeters can close out the Freedom Division Championship Series tomorrow night at PeoplesBank Park with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 pm.
