The Tucson Sugar Skulls of the Indoor Football League announced today they have named Dixie Wooten as both General Manager and Head Coach.
“Dixie is a proven championship coach, and we are extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to bring him to Tucson,” said Sugar Skulls Owner Cathy Guy.
Wooten comes to Tucson after spending three seasons as the Iowa Barnstormers head coach where he compiled a 36-8 regular-season record and winning the 2018 IFL United Bowl championship over the Sioux Falls Storm. In 2017 and 2018, Wooten was named IFL Coach of the Year.
“I’m excited for the opportunity to be the new head coach and general manager of the Tucson Sugar Skulls,” Wooten said. “After only one year, this is one of the premier organizations in the IFL with what we have in place in ownership, the front office and the football operation. We will compete for a championship this year.”
In their inaugural season, the Tucson Sugar Skulls finished with a 7-7 record earning them a playoff spot. They became the first expansion team in IFL history to make the playoffs in their first year.
Current Tucson Sugar Skulls owner and head coach of the Arizona Rattlers Kevin Guy said: “While we were all ecstatic to make the playoffs in our first year, our goal every year is to win a championship.” Guy continued, “Dixie’s experience as a head coach and his history as a winner give us a chance to compete for a championship right now. We’re excited to get started on the 2020 season.”
The Indoor Football League will be releasing their 2020 schedule in early October. The season will kick off in March and conclude in June while the playoffs take place in July.
