Last Friday, the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball announced that there wouldn’t be a 2020 season due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, all of the eight teams are permitted to seek new solutions for a season that conforms to governmental guidelines to open stadiums and play ball.
The High Point Rockers, Southern Maryland Blue Crabs, and the Long Island Ducks are working with several clubs outside of the Atlantic League for a 70-game season that would start in mid-July and conclude at the end of September. The Lancaster Barnstormers, Somerset Patriots, and the York Revolution will hold numerous events at their ballparks. The Sugar Land Skeeters will hold a four-team league at their ballpark starting July 3rd. Each team will play 28-games for a total of 56-games this season.
On Wednesday, The Frontier League also announced that there will not be a 2020 season and that teams are permitted to seek new solutions and follow governmental guidelines. The former Can-Am teams that recently merged with the Frontier League are rumored to be playing against some of the Atlantic League teams. The schedule for the season will be released soon.
For both of these leagues to allow their teams to play even when the season is canceled is something you don’t see in sports. By allowing their teams to potentially play against each other could lead up to something down the road, maybe a partnership or a future merger between the two leagues. While fans will be limited in the ballparks, they could be witnessing history in the Independent baseball world.
