XFL Week 1 Sunday Recap

New York Guardians 23, Tampa Bay Vipers 3


The New York Guardians and the Tampa Bay Vipers kicked off the Sunday slate of XFL games at MetLife Stadium.

Guardians quarterback Matt McGloin was 15 of 29 for 182 yards, one touchdown, and one rushing touchdown. Guardians wide receiver Mekale McKay led the Guardians in receiving yards with three receptions for fifty-eight yards. Guardians wide receiver Colby Pearson had two receptions for forty-four yards and one touchdown.

The Vipers could not get anything going in this game. Vipers quarterback Aaron Murray was 16 of 34 for 231 yards, no touchdowns, and two interceptions. He was replaced with backup quarterback Quinton Flowers, who went one for two for thirty-seven yards. The only points scored for the Vipers was an Andrew Franks 23-yard field goal.

The Guardians defense were the stars of the game as they picked off Murray two times and had five sacks, three forced fumbles, one of them was returned for a touchdown as the Guardians defeated the Vipers 23 to 3.

St. Louis BattleHawks 15, Dallas Renegades 9


The St. Louis BattleHawks and the Dallas Renegades wrapped up the XFL weekend at Globe Life Park. Renegades quarterback Landry Jones was inactive in this game due to a knee injury, and backup quarterback Phillip Nelson got the start.

Phillip Nelson completed 33 of 42 passes for 209 yards, no touchdowns, and one interception. Renegades kicker Austin MacGinnis scored all Dallas points with a 32, 42, and 23-yard field goals.

BattleHawks quarterback Jordan Ta’amu completed 20 of 27 pass attempts throwing 207 yards and one touchdown. BattleHawks running back Keith Ford had four carries for twenty-six yards and touchdown. Staring running-back, Matt Jones had twenty-one carries for eighty-five yards. BattleHawks wide receiver Alonzo Russell had three receptions for forty-nine yards and one touchdown.

The BattleHawks defense got to Nelson four times and intercepted him once. Renegades also got to Ta’amu two times, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery as the BattleHawks defeated the Renegades 15 to 9.
