DC Defenders 27, New York Guardians 0
The DC Defenders shutout the New York Guardians 27-0 behind the Defenders defense intercepting Matt McGloin two times, one of them returned for a touchdown. They also sacked McGloin three-times, and one forced fumble.
Defenders quarterback Cardale Jones was 23 of 37 completions throwing for 276-yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. Defender wide receiver DeAndre Thompkins led the Defenders in receiving yards being targeted nine times with six receptions for ninety-two yards and catching one touchdown. Defenders tight end Derrick Hayward also caught a six-yard touchdown. Defenders running back Donnel Pumphrey led the team in rushing yards with twelve attempts for fifty-two yards. Kicker Ty Rausa made a 27-yard, 36-yard, and 26-yard field goals.
It was not a great afternoon for the Guardians as Matt McGloin was 8 for 19 completions throwing forty-four yards and two interceptions. McGloin was benched for Marquise Williams, who went four for eight throwing for fifty-one yards. Wide receiver Mekale McKay led the team in receiving yards with three receptions on six targets for thirty-yards. Running back Tim Cook III led the team in rushing ten-times for thirty-nine yards.
The Defenders are now 2-0 heading into their week 3 matchup against the Los Angeles Wildcats next Sunday while the Guardians are now 1-1 and will head to St. Louis to take on the BattleHawks next Sunday.
Seattle Dragons 17, Tampa Bay Vipers 9
The Seattle Dragons made their home debut Saturday afternoon at CenturyLink Feld in front of close to 30,000 fans, and the game was a tale of two halves. Tampa Bay Vipers kicker Andrew Franks scored the lone points in the first half with a 36-yard field goal. The Vipers then made it 9-0 as Dragons quarterback Brandon Silvers threw an interception to Tarvarus McFadden and returned for a 78-yard touchdown.
The Dragons cut the lead 9-6 as Brandon Silvers threw a 68-yard touchdown pass to Keenan Reynolds. The Dragons took a 12-9 lead as Vipers quarterback Quinton Flowers threw an interception into the hands of defensive end Marcel Frazier for a one-yard touchdown. The Dragons converted a two-point play to make it a 14-9 lead. Dragons kicker Ernesto Lacayo made a 27-yard field goal to make it a 17-9 game with a little over a minute left in the game. The Dragons defeated the Vipers 17-9.
Dragons quarterback Brandon Silvers finished the day finishing 7 for 18 completions throwing for ninety-one yards, one touchdown, and one interception. Wide Receiver Keenan Reynolds led the team in receptions targeted eight times with three receptions for eighty-seven yards and one touchdown. Running back Trey Williams tied the team in rushing for eleven attempts for forty-five yards and backup running back Kenneth Farrow ten attempts for forty-five-yards.
Vipers quarterback Quinton Flowers was three for seven for eighteen-yards and one interception. He was replaced by quarterback Taylor Cornelius who went 16 of 27 for 154-yards and two interceptions. Vipers running back Jacques Patrick led the team in rushing with fourteen attempts for seventy-three yards. Vipers wide receiver Reece Horn led the team in receiving targeted eight times catching five passes for fifty-one yards. The Dragons defense had four sacks and three interceptions. The Vipers got to Silvers twice and picked him off once.
