Justin Bonsignore dominates NASCAR’S Whelen Modified season opener at Jennerstown

For the first time in the 2020 season, the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour kicked off the 2020 season Sunday afternoon at Jennerstown Speedway in Pennsylvania for the Wade Cole Memorial 133. Justin Bonsignore was the pole sitter, and alongside him was Doug Coby. The officials at NASCAR implemented a competition caution for lap 72.

Bonsignore took the lead from the waving of the green flag and was still leading after 50 laps. There was some great side-by-side action throughout this race. Cars shuffled for position just happy to be back racing. The competition caution came out at lap 70 due to an accident, and all of the teams came to pit road for five minutes to get four tires and fuel. The pit crews were severely limited, and it would take the whole five minutes to adjust the cars. When the race resumed, Bonsignore picked up where he left off.

Matt Swanson was trying to Chase Bonsignore, but Bonsignore would pull away, leaving everyone chasing Swanson for the second position. Swanson would lose the second position to Craig Lutz. Lutz would pull away, chasing Bonsignore for the lead. Lutz would get another chance when the 3rd caution came out involving Sam Rameau hitting the back of the number 50 car driven by Ronnie Williams and collecting other cars.

On the restart, Bonsignore would once again pull away from the pack. Lutz was in a battle defending the second position. He was able to get away from the rest of the field, keeping the second position to himself and now had his eyes on Bonsignore. The rest of the field had great battles from positions three to twelve. However, Lutz ran out of time as Bonsignore crossed the finish line to win the Wade Cole Memorial 133, Craig Lutz took second place, trailing Bonsignore by only 1.776 seconds.
