Kendall Cornine’s two goals lead Metropolitan Riveters to 3-2 win

The Metropolitan Riveters traveled to the Danbury Ice Arena to take on the Connecticut Whale Sunday afternoon. The Riveters were coming off an 8-3 loss to the Boston Pride Saturday. These two teams played against each other last Sunday when the Riveters defeated the Whale 2-1.

The Whale were the first to go on the power play four minutes and fifteen seconds into the first period when Riveters defenseman Rebecca Morse was called for interference. The Whale could not capitalize on the power play. The Riveters would go on the power play a couple of times and still could not take advantage of either one. The game remained tied 0-0 at the end of the first period.

The Riveters would take the lead 1-0 three minutes and twenty seconds into the second period on a goal by forward Madison Packer with Colleen Murphy assisting Packer’s goal. Eight minutes and thirty-three seconds later, the Riveters extended their lead 2-0 on a goal by Kendall Cornine with Madison Packer and Kate Leary assisting Cornine’s goal. Late into the second period, the Whale’s were going on their third power play of the game as Riveters forward Madison Packer was called for tripping. The Whale’s would cut the lead in half 2-1 on a power-play goal by Emma Vlasic with Hanna Beattie assisting Vlasic’s goal. The Riveters led 2-1 at the end of the second period.

Thirty-three seconds into the third period, the Whale’s tied the game 2-2 on a shorthanded goal by Kaycie Anderson. The Riveters would retake the lead 3-2 eleven minutes and twenty-two seconds in the third period as Kendall Cornine scored her second goal of the game with Kiira Dosdall assisting Cornine’s goal. The Whale’s made one last attempt to tie the game pulling goalie Brooke Wolejko for the extra attacker, but the Whale ran out of time as the Metropolitan Riveters defeated the Connecticut Whale 3-2.

The Riveters won the shots on goal total with thirty-one to the Whale’s twenty-three. The Riveters went zero for five on the power play while the Whale were one for five. Metropolitan Riveters goalie Sam Walther made twenty-one of twenty-three saves allowing two goals, while Whale’s goalie Brooke Wolejko made twenty-eight of thirty-one saves allowing three goals.

The Riveters will now head north to the TRIA Rink to take on the Minnesota Whitecaps next weekend, December 14th, at 7 pm and December 15th at 1 pm. The Whale’s next game will be on December 21st against the Minnesota Whitecaps at Danbury Ice Arena.
