Martin Truex Jr. signs extension with Joe Gibbs Racing

            On Wednesday, Joe Gibbs Racing announced they had signed Martin Truex Jr. to a contract extension to continue to drive the No. 19 Toyota Camry. He was scheduled to be a free agent after the 2021 season. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. This comes a little after a week when Joe Gibbs Racing resigned Denny Hamlin.

Team owner Joe Gibbs released a statement on bringing Truex back said, “Extending Martin’s agreement has been a big priority for us this offseason. Martin brings so much to our organization. Obviously, he’s talented and shown he can win at any race track, but his insights also helps to make all our teams better.”

The 40-year-old from Mayetta, NJ, will enter his 18th season in the Cup Series competition. He made his Cup Series debut for Dale Earnhardt Inc. at Atlanta Motor Speedway in 2004. Also, in 2004, he would win his first of two NASCAR Busch Series championships. He has also raced for Michael Waltrip Racing and Furniture Row Racing before joining Joe Gibbs in 2019.

Truex was thrilled to share the news on staying with Gibbs, he said, “I’m happy to get this news out there so we can focus on this season and the future with Joe Gibbs Racing. “This is where I wanted to be and to continue building on the success, we have had together the past two years. I appreciate Coach, my team, everyone at JGR, and all of our partners like Bass Pro Shops, Auto-Owners Insurance, Reser’s Fine Foods, Stanley Black & Decker, and Toyota for making this possible. I look forward to continuing those relationships as we move forward.”

Truex has made 549 career starts, winning nineteen poles, 27 wins, including the Coca-Cola 600 twice and the Southern 500, 116 top-five, and 228 top-ten finishes. He won the 2017 NASCAR Monster Energy Cup Series championship with Furniture Row Racing.

With the contract extension finalized, Truex now turns his attention to get his first Daytona 500 win. The Daytona 500 takes place on Sunday, February 14th at 2:30 pm on FOX
