Metropolitan Riveters defeat Minnesota Whitecaps 4-3 in OT

After suffering a 9-2 defeat Saturday afternoon to the Minnesota Whitecaps, the Metropolitan Riveters were looking for some payback Sunday afternoon at Tria Rink in St. Paul, MN.

The first goal of the game went to Minnesota’s Audra Richards, who scored for the Whitecaps with under six minutes left to play in the first period to put the Whitecaps up 1-0. Lauren Barnes was credited with the assist on Richards’s goal. A little over two minutes later, the Riveters Kendall Cornine, with an assist from Mallory Rushton, created a two on one with Rushton passing the puck, allowing Cornine to score for the Riveters to tie the game up 1-1 after the first period.

Metropolitan would then take the lead late into the second period when Riveters Madison Packer shot the puck into the upper left corner and scored to put the Riveters up 2-1. The assist went to both Kate Leary and Nichelle Simon. With under three minutes to play in the second period, the Whitecaps would tie the game up at 2-2 again when Allie Thunstrom passed the puck to Amanda Boulier, who shot the puck into the net and scored. The game remained tied at the end of the second period.

About four minutes into the third period, the Riveters would once again retake the lead when Kendall Cornine got her second goal of the game on a power play with assists by Mallory Rushton and Rebecca Morse the give the Riveters a 3-2 edge. Minnesota once again tied the game at 3-3 when Allie Thunstrom had a breakaway goal and put the puck under the goalie’s legs with under three minutes left in the game. Once again, the game remained tied at the end of the third period.

Thirty-five seconds into overtime, the Riveters Rebecca Morse scored the game-winning goal to give Metropolitan a 4-3 win over the Minnesota Whitecaps. The three stars of the game were Rebecca Morse, who had one goal and one assist. Kendall Cornine with two goals and Whitecaps Allie Thunstrom, who had one goal and one assist.

Metropolitan goalie Sam Walther made thirty-seven saves out of forty, allowing three goals while Whitecaps goalie Amanda Leveille made twenty saves out of twenty-four, allowing four goals.

The Riveters have a bye next week while the Minnesota Whitecaps will play the Boston Pride next Saturday, October 19th, and Sunday, October 20th, from the Warrior Ice Arena in Boston, MA. Saturday’s game starts at 6:30 pm, and Sunday’s game begins at 2:30 pm. Both games will be on the NWHL Twitch channel.
