By Michael Heilman

The Metropolitan Riveters headed to the Danbury Ice Arena to take on the Connecticut Whale Sunday afternoon. The Riveters were coming off a 5-2 loss to the Boston Pride Saturday. Connecticut are also coming off a loss to the Buffalo Beauts 6-2 and are still searching for their first win of the season.

Three minutes and forty-seven seconds in the first period, Riveters forward Madison Packer delivered a backhand shot and scored to put the Riveters up 1-0 as both Cailey Hutchison, and Kate Leary assisted Packer’s goal. Connecticut had a couple of opportunities to tie the game on the power play but couldn’t convert, and the Riveters led 1-0 at the end of the first period.

The Riveters still led 1-0 at the end of the second period but not without handing Connecticut chances to tie the game as the Whale’s were on the power play four times while the Riveters were on the power play two times and could not extend their lead.

The Riveters would get an insurance goal four minutes and fifteen seconds in the third period as forward Brooke Baker scored a shorthand goal to extend the Riveters lead 2-0. Kendall Cornine and Rebecca Morse assisted Baker’s goal.

The Whale’s would go on their eighth power play of the game, and this time would make it count as forward Emma Vlasic scored to cut the Riveters lead 2-1 with Kayla Meneghin and Jordan Brickner assisting Vlasic’s goal. The Whale’s would make one last push as they pulled goalie Sonjia Shelly for the extra attacker, but the Riveters held them off for a 2-1 win.

Despite the loss, the Whale’s won the shots on goal total with thirty-four to the Riveters twenty-five. The Riveters were zero for six on the power play while the Whale’s were one for nine. Riveters goalie Sam Walther made thirty-three of thirty-four saves, allowing one goal while Whale’s goalie Sonjia Shelly made twenty-three of twenty-five saves, allowing two goals. With the win, the Riveters improve their record to 1-5-1 while the Whale’s are 0-8-1.

The Riveters will return home to the Pro Skate Ice Arena next Saturday, December 7th, at 7 pm against the Boston Pride before returning to the Danbury Ice Arena to play the Connecticut Whale Sunday, December, 8th, at 1:30 pm.
