The Minnesota Whitecaps and the Connecticut Whale returned to the Tria Rink for game two Sunday afternoon after Minnesota defeated Connecticut 6-1 Saturday night.
Minnesota picked up right where they left off a minute and forty-four seconds into the first period as Haylea Schmid scored to put the Whitecaps in the lead 1-0 with assists from Meghan Lorence and Amanda Boulier. The Whitecaps would go on the power play at twelve minutes and twenty-seven seconds on a holding call against Whale’s forward Kayla Meneghin. Thirteen seconds later, Jonna Curtis scored with assists from Nicole Schammel and Meaghan Pezon to put the Whitecaps up 2-0. The Whitecaps remained in the lead 2-0 at the end of the first period.
The game continued to be dominated by the Whitecaps as nineteen seconds into the second period the Whitecaps added another goal to go up 3-0. Meaghan Pezon scored with an assist from Jonna Curtis. Three minutes and six seconds later, they would go up another goal as Allie Thunstrom scored with an assist from Jonna Curtis. Connecticut couldn’t get anything going at all in this game and the Whitecaps led 4-0 at the end of the second period.
Minnesota continued to find the net seven minutes and forty-four seconds in the third period as Stephanie Anderson scored to make a 5-0 lead with assists from Allie Thunstrom and Amanda Boulier. A minute later, Nicole Schammel added another goal for a 6-0 Whitecaps lead. With eight minutes left in the game, the Whitecaps added one more goal as Lauren Barnes made it a 7-0 Whitecaps lead with an assist from Audra Richards. Minnesota dominated this game and would go on to defeat the Connecticut Whale 7-0.
Minnesota did a great job finding the net all game with fifty-one total shots while the Whale’s had twenty-nine. Connecticut was undisciplined, committing nine penalties in the game while the Whitecaps only committed four penalties. Whitecaps goalie Amanda Leveille earned the shutout saving all twenty-nine shots while Connecticut goalies Brooke Wolejko was twenty-five of twenty-eight saves allowing three goals and backup goalie Sonjia Shelly was nineteen of twenty-three allowing four goals.
Minnesota will have a tough task next week as they welcome the undefeated Boston Pride to the Tria Rink Saturday at 7 pm and Sunday at 2 pm. Connecticut will head to the ProSkate Arena next weekend Saturday at 6:30 pm and Sunday at 4:30 pm against the Metropolitan Riveters.
