NWHL Sunday Recap: Minnesota routes Buffalo, Boston shuts out Riveters

By Michael Heilman

Two games were on tap for the NWHL as the Minnesota Whitecaps, and Buffalo Beauts played game two at the Northtown Center, and the Boston Pride visited the ProSkate Arena against the Metropolitan Riveters.

Minnesota Whitecaps 9, Buffalo Beauts 3

Minnesota had a field day with the Beauts in a 9-3 win led by Amanda Boulier’s hat trick while Allie Thunstrom and Haylea Schmid each had two goals. Jonna Curtis and Stephanie Anderson each had scored a goal. Goalie Allie Morse made seventeen of twenty-three saves allowing three goals. Despite the blowout, they allowed the Beauts on the power-play six times. This is something they can not afford to do once the playoffs start.

On the other side, Cassidy MacPherson, Marie-Jo Pelletier, and Becki Bowering scored for the Buffalo Beauts. Beauts goalie Kelsey Neumann was fifteen of twenty saves, allowing five goals, and backup goalie Tiffany Hsu was twelve of sixteen saves allowing four goals. The Beauts committed four penalties with one of them, resulting in a goal for the Whitecaps.

The three stars of the game for the Whitecaps were forward Haylea Schmid with two goals, forward Allie Thunstrom with two goals and one assist, and defenseman Amanda Boulier with three goals.

Minnesota will wrap up the season next weekend at the Tria Rink with back-to-back games against the Connecticut Whale Saturday at 8 pm and Sunday at 2 pm. Buffalo will head to the ProSkate Arena also for back-to-back games against the Metropolitan Riveters Saturday at 6:30 pm and Sunday at 4:30 pm.

Boston Pride 5, Metropolitan Riveters 0

Boston Pride forward Mary Parker scored two goals while Jillian Dempsey, McKenna Brand, and Carlee Toews each scored a goal as the Boston Pride finished the regular season 23-1 in a 5-0 win. Boston committed only two penalties in the game. Goalie Lovisa Selander made all twenty-nine saves and earned another shutout, her second of the season. Boston will now wait for their opponent, either Connecticut or Buffalo. The playoffs begin on March 8th at the Warrior Ice Arena.
