Philadelphia Phillies brings back catcher J.T. Realmuto

On Tuesday, the Philadelphia Phillies brought back their star catcher J.T Realmuto to a five-year, $115.5 million deal, according to SportsGrid’s Craig Mish. Realmuto will make $23.1 million per season, a new average annual value for a catcher set by former Minnesota Twins catcher Joe Mauer, who’s average annual value was $23 million per season.

The 29-year-old from Del City, OK, was acquired by the Phillies from the Marlins on February 19th, 2019, for Sixto Sanchez, Jorge Alfaro, Will Stewart, and $250,000 in international bonus slot money. In 2020, Realmuto made 173 plate appearances and batted .266 with eleven home runs, 32 RBI’s, four stolen bases, and a slugging percentage of .491. Realmuto has been the best catcher for the Phillies since Carlos Ruiz, when he was the Phillies catcher from 2006 to 2016.

In seven years with both the Miami Marlins and the Philadelphia Phillies, Realmuto’s lifetime batting average is .278 with a slugging percentage of .455, along with 95 home runs, 358 RBI’s, 44 stolen bases in 2,940 plate appearances. He is a two-time All-Star, a Gold Glove, and two Silver Slugger winner.

The Phillies first Spring Training game is on Saturday, February 27th, against the Toronto Blue Jays. The first regular-season game is on Thursday, April 1st, against the Atlanta Braves.
