Phillies acquire left-hander Jose Alvarado in a three-team deal

On Tuesday, the Philadelphia Phillies made their first trade under Dave Dombrowski era by acquiring left-hand relief pitcher Jose Alvarado from the Tampa Bay Rays in a three-team trade. The Phillies sent minor league pitcher Garrett Cleavinger to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers will send infielder Dillon Paulson to the Rays.

The 25-year-old from Maracaibo, Zulia, Venezuela, debut in 2017 and just completed his fourth season with the Rays. Alvarado appeared in nine games this season, allowing nine hits, six earned runs, two home runs, six walks, a 6.00 era, thirteen strikeouts in nine innings pitched. Alvarado has struggled with inconsistency and staying healthy for the last two years. In 2018, he had a 1-6 record with 70 appearances, eight saves, allowing 42 hits, 17 earned runs, one home run, 29 walks, 80 strikeouts, finishing with a 2.39 era.

In 2019, Alvarado appeared in only 35 games with a 1-6 record, a 4.80 era, allowed 29 hits, 16 earned runs, two home runs, 27 walks, 39 strikeouts in 30 innings pitched. He left the United States in June for family reasons, missing a month of action. Once he returned, he was twice placed on the disabled list with a right oblique strain and left elbow inflammation.

Overall, in his four-year career, Alvarado has played 149 games, allowing 58 runs, 51 earned runs, 71 walks, 15 saves, 161 strikeouts in 132.2 innings with an era of 3.46.

The Phillies start Spring Training on March 27th against the Toronto Blue Jays with the regular-season starting April 1st at Citizens Bank Park against the Atlanta Braves.
