The Philadelphia Phillies announced today that they have named former Cincinnati Reds manager Bryan Price as the new pitching coach under new manager Joe Girardi.
Price, 57 was the Cincinnati Reds manager for five years from 2014 to 2018. During his five years as the Red manager, the Reds record was 279-387. Before becoming the Reds manager, he served as a pitching coach for three teams, Seattle Mariners from 2000-2005, Arizona Diamondback from 2006 to 2009, and the Reds from 2010-13.
Former MLB pitcher Jamie Moyer told MLB.com Phillies writer Todd Zolecki in a phone interview about Price, which you can read here saying. “He’s a great communicator. He’s a very caring person — caring about his staff and their well-being, not only on the field, but off the field. He’s a good mechanical guy. He works very hard at preparing himself and having his pitchers prepared to attack the hitters. I really, really enjoyed pitching for him. I just really felt that he cared. I gained his trust and he gained my trust. I really think we had a great relationship.”
Price replaces Chris Young, who’s only season as the Phillies pitching coach was not great. The team set a franchise record giving up 258 home runs and finishing with a 4.53 ERA, which ranked the Phillies eleventh in the National League, seventeenth in MLB.
Now that the Phillies can cross off finding a pitching coach off this list, the Phillies will soon be searching for a hitting coach. Former Phillies manager Charlie Manuel served as the hitting coach after the team fired John Mallee in August.
