On January 1, 2019, the wrestling world was introduced to All Elite Wrestling. Since then, AEW has made many announcements like their two upcoming shows Double or Nothing and Fighting for the Fallen along with signing wrestlers like Chris Jericho, Kenny Omega, Allie, Britt Baker, Lucha Brothers, and more.
However, while companies like WWE, ROH, NJPW, and the soon to be launched AEW are making headlines, two companies who not only put on good shows respectfully but are also not mentioned in the conversation are Impact Wrestling and Major League Wrestling. With more wrestling companies emerging, the question then becomes. Should Impact Wrestling and Major League Wrestling merge?
Impact Wrestling has been around since 2002 when they were known as TNA Wrestling. Over the years, they have had some of the best wrestlers wrestle for them like AJ Styles, Samoa Joe, and Bobby Roode. Now, they have wrestlers like Brian Cage, Johnny Impact, Tessa Blanchard, Eddie Edwards and more. Impact Wrestling currently airs their show Fridays on the Pursuit Channel and Twitch.
They also have special events airing exclusively on Twitch. Impact Wrestling has an event coming up called United We Stand, that will feature wrestlers from different promotions including Major League Wrestling. On the other side, Major League Wrestling has been around since 2002. However, they closed their doors in 2004 due to losing money. They reopened again in 2017 and have since gained a footing in the wrestling industry. MLW also airs their show Fusion Friday Nights on beIN Sports and Sunday on YouTube.
If MLW and Impact Wrestling wants to gain ground on companies like WWE, NJPW, ROH, and AEW, they should consider merging as one. What Impact Wrestling has over MLW is a women’s division. MLW used to have women compete like Santana Garrett, but since then the only woman in MLW is Salina de la Renta, who manages several wrestlers like Low Ki and LA Park. On the other side, MLW has better announcers. Their team consists of former WCW announcer Tony Schiavone, Matt Striker, longtime manager Jim Cornette, Kaci Lennox, and Rich Bocchini. Take Impact’s Don Callis and Melissa Santos and add them with this group and you have a heck of a broadcast team.
The other benefits of these two merging would be more wrestlers. Part of today’s wrestling industry outside WWE is that wrestlers can wrestle for more than one promotion. Some are exclusive to specific promotions, others are not, and that allows them to wrestle for any promotion. What both companies have in common is that some of the wrestlers like Rich Swann, Ace Austin, Sami Callihan wrestle for both of them. They also could have two wrestling shows a week with Impact and Fusion, more significant events like Bound for Glory, Battle Riot, Rise of the Renegades, and Slammiversary.
If these two companies were to merge, they might see more big-name wrestlers want to wrestle for them. These promotions need each other and merging these two companies would create an excellent brand for wrestling fans to enjoy.
